Yes! You can now enter the domain “bauer.graphics” into your URL bar and it will take you directly to our site. The future is now, baby!
So, why are we making such a fuss about losing a simple “.com”? Well, it all started earlier this year when the first round of new domain extensions (also called new “top-level domains”) began to pop up around the interwebs. A top-level domain (TLD or TLDN) is one of the domains at the highest level in the hierarchical Domain Name System of the Internet. For example, in the domain name www.example.com, the top-level domain is “.com” (the “dot” and the word that follows it).
It has taken years for the current TLD structure to become a viable. Back in 2011, it was uncommon for brands, small businesses or individuals to have their own domains. The reason? The evaluation fee alone for prospective TLD applicants was a staggering $185,000 with a $5000 deposit on your application fee (according to the gTLD Applicant Guidebook). Owning a customized TLD back then could only have been afforded by large organizations like .google or .apple or .facebook, but now the TLD market is really opening up just like in the .com and .net space.
So, what’s the big deal you ask? We’ll as the Internet evolves, organizations must find ways to communicate with their audiences in more direct and personal ways. Applications such as social networking, niche content sites, and streaming media have created some new innovations, applications and developments that can leverage these unique TLD be it for .cause, .corporate, .fun, .city, or event .you! These new TLDs open up areas that were once reserved for large corporation but now allow for much more targeted and focused control of your place on the web.
Bauer Graphics has taken the first step in expanding into new TLD territory by securing the “Bauer.Graphics” domain. In the future, you’ll be seeing us update our correspondence, collateral and emails to eventually reflect the new address. From there, the “social media sky is the limit” as we find new ways to incorporate our TLD into our day to day operations.
It’s a whole new internet world out there and Bauer Graphics is looking to be the Carol and Michael Brady of this new frontier.
